» WHAT
Increasingly oil, gas and mining companies and international financial institutions have begun to incorporate the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) for indigenous peoples within their policies and guidelines. For many communities, FPIC represents a critical tool for ensuring that they have a say in whether or how projects move forward. While the growing recognition of FPIC is promising, unless effectively implemented these commitments will have little impact on the lives of the people affected by oil, gas and mining projects in their backyards.

Oxfam invites you to attend the presentation of research from Kenya examining the question of FPIC implementation in practice for an oil project that is located on pastoralist lands. The research assesses the extent of Tullow Oil’s compliance with FPIC in Turkana County. With Tullow’s Kenya oil project obtaining FPIC is a requirement as a result of a loan from the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation for the project. This Oxfam research is one of the few case studies that documents FPIC implementation in real time. Discussants will comment on the opportunities and challenges that they have observed as Tullow Oil has worked to ensure FPIC in practice.
