Background
Local content efforts by mining and oil and gas sector companies are no longer a “nice-to-have”. Local procurement and hiring policies are usually seen as tangible contributions to the growth and diversification of local economies in the countries where companies operate, and are part of the tools that companies use to strengthen their social licence to operate. Over the last five years there has been an explosion of activity to create and codify best practices for local content, as well as a rise in the number of company programs aimed at delivering local value creation.

However, at the corporate level mining and oil and gas companies often struggle with meeting ambitious goals at project level. This is confirmed by the recently released Responsible Mining Index (RMI), which suggests that there is room for improvement in mining companies local content implementation.

This webinar features a discussion on effective integration of corporate local value creation strategy in site level operations. Aimed in particular at corporate level sustainability management, site-level procurement representatives, and consultants working with companies on local content strategy, it will feature the insights and experience of two of the global leaders on local content, Shell and Anglo American.

The webinar will tackle two main questions:

  • What works to translate corporate goals into site-level implementation of local content strategy? What are effective ways to overcome inertia associated with “initiative overload” which is often a cause of concern for site level management?
  • What are effective methods to share experience internally between sites in order to learn from successes (and failures)?

Presentations will be followed by ample time for Q & A and discussion with the audience.

Speakers:

  • Kathy Khuu, Senior Advisor, Economic Development and Local Content, Government Relations at Shell International B.V.
  • Kristine Makabali, Logistics Manager, Shell Philippines Exploration B.V.
  • Adele Lombaard, Inclusive Procurement, Supply Chain Services, Anglo American

Following the presentation, a summary will be posted on the ELLED Community of Practice (CoP) and the discussion will continue online.
