Established in 2005, the objective of the IGF is to enhance the contribution of the mining, minerals and metals sector to sustainable development by promoting improved good governance in the national management of mineral resources.
As the only global forum focussed on addressing mineral and mining governance challenges and opportunities, the IGF serves as an important venue for international dialogue between governments. The IGF convenes developing countries, trading partners and donors to discuss and advance issues of mutual concern, such as international standards and best practices in extractive sector management and governance. Bringing together high-level participants from Mining Ministries from around the world, in addition to civil society organizations and mining companies, the IGF is a voluntary partnership that provides the needed space for sharing information and lessons learned amongst its members.
The IGF meets annually in Geneva, Switzerland to discuss issues and challenges related to the mining sector in developing countries. The 2013 meeting brought together 217 participants from 49 member and observer governments, 55 international, industry and civil society organizations to discuss significant and emerging challenges in the mining sector.
