Whilst buyer-supplier portals have been around for decades, there is a current trend of stakeholders setting up new portals in around the extractive industries in particular. They are seen as key tools to drive local procurement and improve supplier competitiveness in the countries that host mining and oil and gas production. Some portals are extractives specific, but others are multi-sectoral where extractive industry companies are just a small proportion of many buyers. They provide a range of functions, from RFQs, to centralized supplier databases, as well as access to feedback and support.
However, not all initiatives have been successful, and many struggle with financial sustainability. This session aims to bring together practitioners who have direct experience in designing and operating initiatives, along with stakeholders who want to set up and use such portals.
This Extractives-led Local Economic Diversification Community of Practice (ELLED CoP) webinar will assist decision-makers (extractive industry companies, governments, aid donors, etc) considering creating or enhancing existing portals to understand options, decisions, success factors and pitfalls. It will share good practice between implementers to enable increased sustainability and impact on local content, and feature examples of two different types of buyer-supplier portals presenting their approach.
The webinar will answer two main questions:
Presentations will be followed by ample time for Q & A and discussion with the audience.
