ASGM mercury use and emissions estimates for the 2018 GMA

Dear GOXI/ ASGM colleagues,

The Artisanal Gold Council, in Victoria, Canada, is currently participating in the UNEP/AMAP Global Mercury Assessment (GMA) for 2018. As most of you know, the mission of the GMA is to provide the most recent information available on worldwide atmospheric mercury emissions, releases to the aquatic environment, and the transport and fate of mercury in the global environment.

One of the tasks we are undertaking is to search for and collate new data on mercury use and emissions made by the Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sector in each country. The 2018 GMA inventory product may be taken into consideration by some countries in a Minamata mercury baseline context so it is important that the new ASGM estimates reflect the best possible up-to-date information available.

In this light, we are polling related groups who may have updated information on ASGM mercury use. This data can be national, regional, municipal, or site-specific.

Relevant proxy data is also welcome, as this data helps to estimate ASGM mercury emissions. Examples of proxy data are:

gold production

miner population

import/export data

type(s) of ore processing used (concentrated or whole-ore amalgamation)

If anybody has and is able to contribute this type of information to the GMA through us at the AGC, please contact Jennifer O’Neill at joneill@artisanalgold.org. Attached is a fillable table of suggested ASGM proxy data that is designed to make the process most efficient for you. if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Jennifer.

The deadline for proxy data submission is May 8th. This will give us time to calculate national estimates before contribution to the first round of modelling on May 15.

The deadline for higher-level estimates (i.e., if your programme has already calculated regional or national ASGM mercury use) is May 11th.

Best Regards,
