Thanks Jasmin.  I currently work as an independent consultant, and my client base ranges from mining and oil&gas companies to government agencies and small NGOs.  As a sociologist, my work entails working with communities, and for the most part these are communities affected by industry, whether extractive or otherwise.  It is not possible to divorce the fate of the environment from that of humans and other animals, and I believe it is important for sociologists and other social impact specialists to work closely with environmental experts to produce sustainable results.  Environmental governance is vital to a sustainable future.  It is with this in mind that I am pleased to join this group and look forward to not only learn from other members, but also to contribute to the group.

Hello Jasmin,

Thank you for adding me to the group and introducing me. To continue with the introduction let me introduce both Afai Consulting as well as another organisation that I do represent and that works on environmental issues.

Afai Consulting BV (www.afaiconsulting.com) is a young consultancy based in Amsterdam and with global expertise in:

i. Understanding the (socio-) political economy of extractive value chains, from the origin of the productive inputs, to the extraction sites, middlemen, and on to final users.

ii. Understanding the role of legitimate and illegitimate armed actors and criminal groups in the extractive sector and where necessary close opportunities for their participation in the sector or regulate their role(s).

iii. ASM and its relation to local stakeholders, including companies, communities, and, at-risk and disadvantaged populations.

It also happens that I am also one of the founders and advisors to the Fundación Ava Jeva Amazonia (AJA), a foundation based in the Caquetá department of Colombia that is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of the Amazonian biosphere in said department through the implementation of win-win solutions for communities, the environment and all the stakeholders of the cattle ranching industry, the main economic engine of the region.

AJA’s website (www.avajeva.org) is up since yesterday, but at the moment contains about a million typos we need to correct, as our local web-designer only speaks Spanish (illustrating some of the issues of local procurement, an ongoing discussion on Goxi). If you visit our website now, please bear with us for the next week or so!

AJA is the main driver of my interest in environmental conservation and restoration and has focused efforts on these issues within a good governance framework. Something that fits within the activities of Afai Consulting and provides bridges between the good governance of the extractive sector and environmental issues linked to said sector. With that in mind the main interest in joining this group is to gain input as well as ideas from other practitioners in the sector, in particular in regards to governance of the environment in areas of little governance and with depleted social/trust capital.

Looking forward to discuss with the other group members!
