It just depends in which country the media finds itself.
The media can be only effective in an environment that is free of bodily harm and other threats to journalists who carry out unbiased and constructive analysis of issues important to their peopel. What dilutes the important role of journalism these days across Africa is the ridiculous emotional and sensational reporting that passes as professional journalism. These only ferment additional discord in already ignorant and tension-replete societies. The media must walk a fine line between their newly-found freedom to report on anything and the security of their communities from civil upheaval. Remember, even in the mothers-of -democracies, journalists are expected to report responsively in order not to destroy the characters of good citizens or jeopardize the securities of their societies.
