sharing in governance of extractive industries

Dear members of Media in Extractive Industries (MEI),

A new body of professional media practitioner has been born in Uganda.

Uganda Energy Journalists Association (UEJA) aims at bringing Journalists into a suitable platform which will enable meaningful engagement in not only Uganda’s fledging petroleum industry but also understand extractive industries issues.

The broad objective of UEJA is strengthening the capacity of Journalists on objective reporting and understanding the nature of the Energy/Natural Resources Sector in Uganda.

UEJA specific objectives are:

  1. To engage educating the general public on petroleum development and thereby influencing public opinion, policies and decision-making process;
  2. To establish reporting standards to ensure that media reports are factual, well researched and positively contribute to the development of petroleum and energy resources in Uganda;
  3. To enable the capacity strengthening for individual and institutional journalists to improve their understanding of the petroleum and energy sector and thereby influence towards better economic, social and environmental responsibility;
  4. To promote transparency and accountability, respect for human rights, the rule of law, poverty eradication and corporate accountability in the management of natural resources in the country and;
  5. To provide an effective interface for Civil Society and the general public to communicate their issues to public officials and public decision-making process

I am glad to share with you that UEJA is a legal entity.  Our medium term goal is to register UEJA as a Non-For-Profit Organisation.

In the next two month, we intend to hold a two-day training session for upcountry and national journalists aimed at enhancing their skills and grow the numbers of Journalists who will cover accurate and factual analysis and investigation related to the energy sector.

But UEJA faces resources mobilisation challenges. Any idea, suggestions and assistance is highly welcome.

Thanks again and let’s keep the platform lively.

Ibrahim Kasita,

Founder and President,

Uganda Energy Journalists Association (UEJA)
