Climate Smart Mining

Welcome to the GOXI Climate Smart Mining (CSM) Network!

Why Do We Need Climate Smart Mining?

In June 2017, the World Bank published a report entitled “The Growing Role of Minerals and Metals for a Low Carbon Future,” examining how minerals and metals demand could be impacted due to the global commitment to keep the global average temperature at, or, below 2 C. The report concludes that there will be a substantial increase for a number of key commodities in supplying raw materials for clean energy technologies required to realize a low carbon future.

While such growing demand for certain minerals and metals provides economic opportunities for mineral-rich developing countries and the private sector alike, significant challenges are likely to emerge if the climate-driven clean energy transition is not managed responsibly and sustainably.

Who are we?

The CSM network is a knowledge platform hosted by the World Bank’s Energy and Extractives Global Practice, in collaboration with Germany-Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GiZ). The CSM Network aims to bring together members from governments, the mining, energy, technology and automotive sectors, investors, civil society organizations (CSOs) and environmental advocates.

What is our objective?

Our objective is to enable people in resource-rich developing countries to benefit economically from the rising demand of raw materials for clean energy technologies by effectively promoting their natural resources, attracting the right investors and supporting policies that allow for the equitable sharing of mining revenues, promote innovation and the sustainable management of natural resources.

What is our approach?

The CSM Network’s aim is to exchange ideas and information, facilitate discussions and bring together a wide range of experts on how to implement CSM practices in resource-rich developing countries, as well as share knowledge on key market trends in the mining, renewable energy and automotive sectors. Climate Smart Mining topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Management of supply chains for low carbon technologies;
  • Reducing GHG emissions through the electrification of mines and processing plants using renewable energy, electric vehicles and other ‘green’ technologies;
  • Adoption of a circular economy approach, including recycling;
  • Landscape-level planning, including sustainable infrastructure, water and forestry management;
  • Aligning of government policy with the Paris Agreements through effective environmental and climate governance relevant to the mining sector.

We encourage members of the CSM Network to engage in meaningful discussions on which ‘climate smart’ elements will enable the mining industry to take a more proactive role in addressing climate change and minimizing its material impacts, with a focus on how this can benefit developing countries.

How do you become a member?

We would now like to invite you to the group and contribute to the discussions by following these easy steps:
