sharing in governance of extractive industries
AECOM’s International ESIA and Social Sustainability Team is recruiting an Associate Director experienced in delivering ESIA and ESDD in line with international funders’ environmental and social standards (eg. IFC, World Bank, AfDB, EBRD).
Our work helps clients deliver their projects in socially sustainable ways, leading to better outcomes for projects and communities. Our team gains experience of some of the world’s largest and most challenging projects, working with a diverse range of clients and communities in different countries, and across many sectors including water, oil and gas, power, renewables, infrastructure and mining. Our ESDD and ESIA specialists perform the full range of consulting services for international projects, including ESIAs, ESDD and audits, RAPs and LRPs. We work closely with specialists in AECOM’s network of offices in over 150 countries. Our geographical areas of focus include Africa, Middle East and Central/ Eastern Europe.
As a senior member of the International ESIA and Social Sustainability Team, you will lead the social aspects of ESIA and ESDD on major international projects for our private sector clients and on behalf of international lenders. Working as either a member of a multidisciplinary team, or directly for clients, you will provide direction and senior review of social workstreams, including: developing and implementing social baseline methods, community and stakeholder engagement, assessments of social impacts, defining mitigation measures, social management plans, preparing and implementing resettlement and livelihood restoration plans, community investment, and assisting clients in meeting international lender standards. You will be comfortable leading ESIA and ESDD studies as a project manager, and will ideally also have social specialisms, such as resettlement, human rights, labour and working conditions, etc.
You will have responsibilities to nurture and grow the social sustainability team, including mentoring junior consultants, shaping team strategy, and business development.
The successful candidate will undertake the following illustrative roles and responsibilities:
Coordinate and be centrally involved in the delivery of major ESIA, ESDD and E&S monitoring projects.
Lead assessments of social impacts, defining mitigation and social management plans.
Assist clients in meeting international lender standards and advise on international best practice in social performance.
Deliver work through well written reports and presentations to clients.
Client account management and engagement with project funders, affected communities and other stakeholders.
Lead and contribute to the preparation of project bids.
Contribute to business development and working winning activities.
Manage international project teams and staff mentoring.
Demonstrate leadership in quality and Health & Safety.
Assist the team in meeting performance targets.
You must have international experience outside of the UK, including experience in coordinating the delivery of ESIA (and preferably also ESDD) projects, excellent knowledge of international finance standards (such as IFC, Equator Principles, World Bank E&S Framework, EBRD) and be highly motivated and able to work with limited direction.
The successful candidate would ideally have a post-graduate qualification related to social development or environmental management. Candidates with a relevant under-graduate degree and a comprehensive level of practical experience will also be considered.
