However, mining done under this legislative framework exposes the country’s environment and public health to significant damage. It also deprives the country of greater economic benefits the sector could provide. For the past two years, the AUA Center for Responsible Mining’s Mining Legislation Reform Initiative (MLRI) has identified legislative and institutional gaps in the mining sector, with the aim of reducing its many costs as well as identifying ways in which mining can provide sufficient benefit to the nation to outweigh those costs. Activities under this initiative will include creating coalitions and consultative groups between the Armenian government, RA National Assembly, international community, NGOs and concerned communities in identifying legislative gaps as well as crafting and implementing change. MLRI will also provide an ongoing watchdog function in alerting citizens on mining-related legislative changes that may be to public detriment. The Initiative will have a Manager who will report to the CRM director. The expected duration of the position is 1 year but there may be the possibility of extension.
