sharing in governance of extractive industries
As a community, GOXI’s mission is for practitioners to share, learn, connect and collaborate in the governance of extractive industries with the vision that natural resources help eliminate poverty and contribute to sustainable development. We (The Conveners) encourage your participation and we hope that your share something, learn something and connect with someone to make something happen.
As a tool, GOXI is designed to be user-driven and co-created by you, the community (aka GOXIans). With the power in your hands, here a few guidelines for your interaction in order to foster a vibrant, safe and decent community:
FIRST, SOME SOCIAL MEDIA BASICS
We recognize that you may be an expert on mining development agreements, but when it comes to social media, your reaction has, until now, been…“Well I’ve heard of the Internet.”
But as you begin your begin your interaction in this Youtube-Facebook-Ning-Twitter world, remember that on these platforms, you will typically be interacting with “friends” who have never met you and who can’t read your body language or tone of voice, so great care must be taken to communicate clearly. Teasing and sarcasm are especially risky on the web. For that matter, emoticons have evolved to express online what one would normally express nonverbally. The most common are:
Yes, we also recognize that the social media veterans here will look at these basics and just go (-_-) zzzzz, but that’s okay too. GOXI is about learning and sharing.
…begin with yourself
The way GOXIans interact and participate on GOXI will shape GOXI. If you wish to see more emphasis on a particular issue, mineral or country, begin by sharing news, pictures, videos, papers, etc. on that issue, mineral or country; if you wish to have more feedback on your post, start by giving feedback on other people’s posts; if you wish to create an ongoing discussion around a special topic, start a group. That’s just the way it works.
There are multiple ways in which natural resources can lead to sustainable development—and we welcome yours. GOXI is meant to foster frank, constructive dialogue in an atmosphere of mutual respect. The last thing we want on GOXI is groupthink on any issue. Quite to the contrary, we seek diverse, assertive viewpoints so feel free to be that opposing viewpoint. It’s the only way we can truly fulfill the “learn” part of the mission of GOXI.
…talk to strangers
If you’re not connecting, you’re not maximizing GOXI. Connecting practitioners is fundamental to GOXI’s mission and we tried to make it easy for you to search for other GOXIans by name, sector, interests, country, etc. If you find someone interesting in that regards, feel free to “friend” him, send him a message or leave him a comment.
…use foul and abusive language, especially at another member.
We understand that when it comes to extractive industries, opinions can be strong and debates heated. Nevertheless, we ask that all opinions are expressed with civility and debates be on opinions and viewpoints—never on persons.
….post offensive material on GOXI
Such material includes but is not limited to obscene imagery or language. Given the cultural diversity of GOXIans, determining obscenity will not always be easy, but it will be at the discretion of the community manager.
…harass or threaten people
Without going into the different potential manifestations of harassment on GOXI, we ask that you let common sense, civility, professionalism and the law (where applicable) be your guide. Given our inability to access all interactions between GOXIans, we will primarily rely on anyone who feels harassed to report the matter to us. We will then investigate and take the appropriate action.
… violate member’s privacy
While we seek to foster connecting with other GOXIans and sharing content with the outside world, do not sell or give out GOXIans’ personal information to third parties. Also, do not post on the site, or send GOXIans, information that it is not related to the subject focus of the site. In general, do not spam GOXIans with email.
You would have noticed, taking the above guidelines in totality, that all the things we encourage you to do, we ask that you do them within reason. We designed GOXI so members have to be approved by the moderator with the goal of letting in only those people and organizations which can contribute substantively and with civility. We trust you are one.
COMMUNITY MANAGER’S ROLE
The community manager’s role is to foster the vibrant and safe community that we aim for. The general approach is one of care and maintenance, but where necessary, the community manger will step in to ensure that such members abide by the rules. In most cases, when a violation has occurred, the community manager will try to alert the violating user to take corrective action or inaction. There is usually one warning before the user's account is deleted however, depending the situation the community manager reserves the right to delete any user’s information and account without warning.
The community manager will also protect personal information of GOXIans. Please note that GOXI does not provide your personal email to anyone. Email communications are limited and will be sent by the community manager with the purpose of facilitating learning, engagement and connections.
As a GOXIan you can message the community manager to alert them of any abuse or violations to GOXI's community guidelines. We welcome your comments, questions and feedback.
