With metal prices down, which minerals will pave Africa’s development?

Plunging metal prices have put a group of lesser known ‘Neglected Development Minerals’ into the spotlight. This week thousands of executives, financiers, prospectors, investors and government officials will descend on Cape Town, South Africa for the 'Investing in African Mining Indaba.' Cape Town is not the centre of African mining, but for a week each year in February, it temporarily becomes the mining capital of the world. Companies pitch their…See More

About My Work
At UNDP I manage the ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme, a 3-year, €13.1 million capacity building programme to improve the management of Neglected Development Minerals in the African, Caribbean and Pacific.

The programme is an initiative by the ACP Group of States, coordinated by the ACP Secretariat, financed by the European Commission and UNDP, and implemented by UNDP.

The initiative provides capacity-building support to the small-scale private sector, associations/chambers, public institutions and communities that operate in the Neglected Development Minerals sector, including, the mining of construction materials, dimensions stones, industrial minerals and semi-precious stones.

Prior to joining UNDP I was Deputy Director at the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining at the Sustainable Minerals Institute, The University of Queensland, Australia. My interests lie across the sustainability of the extractive resource industries with a particular focus on the social and environmental change associated with mining and energy developments.

Originally trained as a geologist, I began my career as a field geoscientist in Brazil and Australia. After retraining in political and social sciences, I worked as a social scientist leading a unit within the natural resources and water department of the Queensland State Government, Australia. I have held research and teaching positions at Griffith University and The University of Queensland, and have been a visiting professor at Universidad Católica del Norte, Chile; Columbia University, New York; The University of Eastern Finland; and The University of Western Australia.

I serve as Co-Chair for Social Impact Assessment at the International Association for Impact Assessment and as a member of the Good Governance of Extractive and Land Resources Thematic Group of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network. I have field experience at more than 40 mining and energy sites internationally and I have authored around 80 publications on topics such as mining policy, resource governance, social impact assessment, cumulative impacts and company-community relations.
Areas of interest
gold, diamonds, oil and natural gas, csr, governance and anti-corruption, investing, geology, environment, social accountability, human rights, monitoring revenue collection, redistribution and sustainable development
