Over the last ten years Jessica van Onselen has specialised in advising mining companies and their host governments on complex engagements. She is a strategic communications specialist with a particular interest in mining and government engagement in Africa.
Jessica spent a number of years with gold mining company AngloGold Ashanti. In her role as Public Affairs Manager for AngloGold Ashanti’s Africa region she gained strong Africa experience and exposure, working on issues of strategic engagement, negotiation and political risk mitigation. She has experience at all stages of the mine life-cycle, from exploration to closure, including tax, mining code and licence renegotiations in a number of African countries.
In 2012 Jessica was seconded to the World Gold Council in London to work on the global gold body’s Conflict Free Gold Standard, published later that same year, which allowed her to work with a wide range of international mining companies.
Jessica founded JvO Consulting in 2013. Now, Jessica works closely with a range of clients – both private and public - on issues of political risk, policy advocacy and issues driven engagement, with a strong focus on the extractive industries. She has worked on mining issues in Mali, Guinea, the DRC, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and the United States.
She has especially deep experience in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Ghana.
