Flexicadastre misrepresents DRC World Heritage Sites/Protected Areas

Flexicadastre's DR Congo Mining Cadastre Map portal has shrunken, clipped, and generalized the boundaries of UNESCO World Heritage sites and other protected areas in the DR Congo. Despite aiming to promote transparency, Flexicadastre has avoided difficult questions posed by the situation where legal protected areas are overlapped by mining permits. Congolese law states that activities incompatible with conservation are not permitted in its protected areas. General interpretation of laws is that…See More

About My Work
Worked in DRC conservation to promote a balanced approach where wildlife and protected areas have their place in an integrated socioeconomic development plan.

My technical training is in GIScience, and its applications include land-use planning and biological monitoring within the conservation sector. Since working in the Ituri Forest of eastern DRC, I have seen that wildlife is considered a free and expendable resource while the perception is that only mining and logging can promote development. In a clearly ungoverned context, neither resource is being harnessed for development and those free resources (water, wildlife) are being damaged beyond repair.

My belief is that mining can be good for socioeconomic development and it can be good for biodiversity, as long as conservation is defined as imperative by both the mining sector and central government.

Hi Joel,

Thanks. It was actually your debate with SpatialDimensions about the DRC heritage sites that brought me to Goxi. I would be very interesting to chat about your work. I assisted with a lot of the environmental audit work for the Mongbwalu project before I joined AngloGold.

Hope you have a good day!
