Energy Urgency: Why the Global Mining Industry is Embracing Renewables

In recent months, events across three continents showed how clean energy use by the mining industry, which consumes 11 percent of global energy, can mitigate climate change on a planet where 2,000 mechanized mines struggle with fuel prices, carbon emissions and ever-increasing logistical challenges. Moreover, Hindustan Zinc Ltd. in India, Redavia Solar and IAMGOLD Corp. in Africa and Chile’s copper mining giants underscored how a…See More

The Global Mining Industry Begins to Embrace Renewables

By Joseph Kirschke -Triple PunditOn June 8, in a rocky, arid and remote corner of Western Australia, a copper-gold mine owned by Sandfire Resources, a mid-tier firm, witnessed the commissioning of an adjacent 34,080-panel photovoltaic (PV) solar installation. It was a milestone: With Australian Renewable…See More

Renewable Energy and Mining

Hello Everyone -I'm developing investor and media outreach for mining firms which use renewable energy, a new trend. Despite record low oil prices, clean energy is increasingly viewed as more reliable given the costs and cumbersome nature of trucked in diesel.Challenges persist, namely financing models and untested battery storage - imperative at projects where power outages can have serious safety and operational implications. Still the long-term outlook is positive.    Given the…See More

A Glimmer of Hope from South Africa’s Mining Industry

Joseph KirschkeEarly this year, after three months of rolling blackouts managed to keep their country from total darkness, South Africa’s long-suffering people finally saw their energy crisis like a gathering storm. “There is a medium probability of load shedding today and tomorrow,” Eskom, the national utility, tweeted in a first, “with a higher probability on Thursday and Friday.”   South Africa’s power-hungry mining industry, Africa’s largest, causes much of the strain – while struggling to…See More

CSR21 Land Citizenship - Mining—Inclusive Investment for a New Triple Bottom Line

By Joseph KirschkeThe biggest mining super-cycle in recent memory, beginning in the early 2000s and fueled by unprecedented emerging market growth, is now history: Headcounts have been slashed, fleets parked and exploration budgets flattened, with profits falling 71% to $20 billion by 2013. This year, with the plunge of copper – and most base metals – the bottom fell out completely. In the background, a different type of erosion has long since begun: wholesale sustainability cutbacks – the…See More

The Mining Industry’s surprising turn to Solar and Wind Energy

By Joseph Kirschke | (Informed Comment)When mining professionals the world over descended on Toronto’s 2015 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada Convention (PDAC) at the beginning of March, the investment outlook at one of the industry’s most important events was dim . A global economic slowdown and a glut of metals and minerals for construction, infrastructure and energy on the Chinese mainland also cast a long shadow over budgets for sustainability – an increasingly core element…See More

About My Work
Introducing mining companies with outperforming CSR to sustainability-focused investors worldwide - including social impact entrepreneurs, philanthropists, ethical funds and other financial institutions. While mining and extractive sector operations have massive footprints around the globe, moreover, they also have potential to be catalysts for change.

Only now are investors trending toward sustainability in risk mitigation terms: Lose a social license to operate, that is, and lose everything. With billions addressing climate change and development needs in the global south, meanwhile, few industries are better poised to advance such positive transformations writ-large. In 2013, for instance, more than a dozen top mining CEOs gathered for a quiet "day of reflection" at the Vatican.

It was no coincidence. Indeed, when it comes to investing in sustainability, there are few better bets than the global mining industry. By exposing miners and other extractive businesses to this emerging investment class with a social conscience, my specialty capacities further include strategic outreach across media platforms, multi-stakeholder engagement and technical advisory services.
