sharing in governance of extractive industries

Article concerning Talvivaara mine and water pollution in Finland

Announcing a new article in the journal “The Extractive Industries and Society (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214790X16301770)” with my colleagues and co-authors, Heidi Tiainen and Tuija Mononen, titled “Talvivaara mine and water pollution: An analysis of mining conflict in Finland”.

In this paper we are analysing the Talvivaara mine case in Finland. The Talvivaara mine started its production in 2008 by using bioleaching process technology. It had big problems in water management during years 2010-12. Through this problem case, the mining industry in Finland has learned a great deal about the needs to improve its environmental accountability, social responsibility and open communication.

Unfortunately the paper is not open access, but for those of you who don’t have access to the journal, please email me and I can send you the PDF.

This article contributes to the growing literature on natural resource management conflicts and mineral related environmental conflicts in particular, focusing on the case of the Talvivaara project in Finland. The economic and environmental impacts of this mine became a key focus of Finnish politics during 2010–12. Its performance has sparked a heated discussion about the legitimacy of the mining industry and its place in Finnish society. The paper analyses the Talvivaara crisis as a process, which began as a local environmental conflict but would become a symbol of national conflict in the mining industry. The policy analysis presented here is informed by Pondy’s Model of Organisational Conflict

Thanks Rauno for sharing this interesting paper which draws attention to key dimensions of increasing conflict in Finland from local to national levels. It raises important lessons for other contexts.
