Conference on oil exploration in Lake Tanganyika, Feb 2017.

The 2-day conference chaired by DRC Oil Minister started on 16/02 and ended on 18/02 in Kalemie, DRC. All 4 countries of the Tanganyika Basin were present: Zambia, Burundi, Tanzania and DRC. It was announced that 18 blocs have been granted to oil exploration companies, DRC which has the longest coastline with a record 11 of them.  There is no evidence of any engagement with coastal communities who are dependent on the little fish still left in the lake for their livelihood; therefore it's critical that environmentalists and community relations experts get involved now and start sensitizing all stakeholders on the need to do things right first time. The Tanganyika Basin feeds into the Congo Basin via its only outlet, the Lukuga River in Kalemie. There are already huge problems: warming of the lake, depleting fish and pollution...
