sharing in governance of extractive industries
The 2-day conference chaired by DRC Oil Minister started on 16/02 and ended on 18/02 in Kalemie, DRC. All 4 countries of the Tanganyika Basin were present: Zambia, Burundi, Tanzania and DRC. It was announced that 18 blocs have been granted to oil exploration companies, DRC which has the longest coastline with a record 11 of them. There is no evidence of any engagement with coastal communities who are dependent on the little fish still left in the lake for their livelihood; therefore it's critical that environmentalists and community relations experts get involved now and start sensitizing all stakeholders on the need to do things right first time.
