sharing in governance of extractive industries

Dear clients, partners and friends,

As another year comes to a close, RCS Global would like to thank all of you for your most valued support. 2015 was a hugely successful year for us in which we significantly extended our global work portfolio, appointed Michèle Brülhart onto RCS Global’s board, and made important structural improvements. For example, as part of our accelerated growth, we consolidated the creation of a China based team, operating throughout the year. We are also particularly proud of the very positive results our new quality management system has produced, which has yielded not just many positive client reviews, but has also allowed our clients to provide feedback through a structured mechanism, which has allowed us to make internal process adjustments and tailor our offerings even better to our clients’ needs.

Workwise, our Responsible Supply Chains work area has seen significant growth. While our work with some of the largest global brands on their responsible sourcing practices is often confidential, we are very proud that our team helps to shape responses and solutions to todays responsible sourcing challenges, globally. In 2015 we have:

  • Worked closely with the Conflict Free Sourcing Initiative (CFSI) on trainings for smelters and auditors, improvements to audit protocols and tools as well as engagement with smelters and refineries participating in the Conflict Free Smelter Program. For the first time, the CFSI has a set of training modules for smelters that is available on demand. Furthermore, our work on the gold audit protocol and audit tools has resulted in improved alignment between the CFSI’s audit protocol and the OECD Due Diligence Guidance.
  • Designed the first ever due diligence program to export responsibly mined artisanal gold from an ‘Artisanal Mining Zone’ in the DRC as part of USAID's Capacity Building for Responsible Minerals Trade (CBRMT) program.
  • Shared our expertise to help shape the global discussion at a number of world leading conferences including the OECD Responsible Supply Chains conference in Paris, the Conflict Free Sourcing Initiative conflict-free smelter conference in San Jose, the LBMA responsible gold conference in Vienna and the new CCCMC conference on responsible supply chains in Beijing.

Equally, in our ASM and transparency work areas, RCS Global’s team has participated in or presented at important international forums, such as EITI Board Meetings and the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF)’s Annual Forum. In terms of content, we have been busy and – amongst various other projects – have led two of the most exciting processes over the year:

  • We continued our role as Trafigura’s advisors on their journey to become the commodities trading industry’s leader on transparency. The company became the first privately held major commodities trading house to become an official EITI supporter, voluntarily published its payments to governments in line with the EITI’s disclosure provisions and became a driving force in the establishment of an EITI Working Group on commodities trading transparency, which will make recommendations to the EITI on how to become an even more effective process to further commodities trading industry transparency.
  • We continue to progress the development of the ‘Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM) Management Guidance for Governments’ for the IGF, which has 54 members states. RCS Global will finalise the Guidance by the summer of 2016 and it will become the dedicated go-to document for Governments the world over, who seek advice on ASM management.

We are proud of our accomplishments in 2015 and want to send out a big thank you to all our clients for helping us get there. From our long standing clients to our new partnerships, it is your relationships that we most value. We look forward to our work together developing innovative solutions in 2016 and we wish you a happy and healthy festive season.
