sharing in governance of extractive industries
The Crown Agents Foundation, in co-operation with the Revenue Department of Liberia’s Ministry of Finance, is planning a regional workshop on the issue of taxation and extractive industries. The workshop, entitled ‘Maximizing revenue from Extractive Industry: Getting it right from the start’, will be held in Monrovia from November 12th to 14th 2013.
The emphasis will be on how getting both tax policy and administration right in advance of extractive projects (or as early as possible) avoids many problems later on. This will include both the policy perspective (ensuring a fiscal regime and block allocation process are established in advance) and the administrative perspective (ensuring early auditing of costs, appropriate capacity in revenue authority etc).
We are currently inviting potential delegates from several West African countries who will share their experiences (both positive and negative) in extractives taxation. The workshop will also involve international experts who will discuss ‘international good practice’.
More details to be posted in due course.
