New Report by PWYP Indonesia & KPK: Administration of Coal Permit under Coordination & Supervision of KPK

Recently we launched our report on the administration of coal mining permit in Indonesia, result of rigorous teamwork between Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Indonesia and KPK. The report depicts the chaotic state of coal mining permit, the efforts taken by the government to unravel the problems also a little improvement resulting from an intensive work of collaboration among stakeholders under coordination and supervision of KPK in the last three years. The report also offers rigorous data and information on coal mining permit which has not been brought in light over a decade.

The main findings include:

  • 776 problematic coal mining permits has been revoked by the local government from 2014 to 2017, cover 3.56 million hectares of mining area.
  • The remaining coal mining permits per April 2017 are 2,966, in which 52% of them or 1,561 has been expired.
  • 940.4 thousand hectares of coal concession are located in no go zone area (the conservation and protected forest). Mostly distributed in Papua and Kalimantan.
  • If the coal production is not controlled, the coal reduction target (as fossil energy) of National Planning General Energy will not be reached.
