New report on mining companies and host communities during the Ebola outbreak

Dear GOXI Members,

We are very excited to release a new report which may be of interest to you entitled “Mining Companies and Host Communities: Experiences Before, During a...”, and to announce a webinar in early 2016 to discuss this report.

Over the past year, the international community has been producing a considerable amount of research stemming from the West African Ebola Outbreak.  While there have been numerous articles and reports discussing the role of mining companies in this complex situation, the voice of mining-affected communities has not been strong.  Our research used interviews to understand the experiences of four mining host communities in Sierra Leone, and consider how well-being of similar communities could be improved moving into the future.

This report takes advantage of a unique research opportunity to present information on four mining host communities in Sierra Leone gathered through interviews conducted at three time points: before the outbreak, during the height of the outbreak, and near the end of the outbreak.  The report focuses on the major challenges faced by the communities during the crisis, and how the outbreak affected the relationship between the mining companies and the host communities. The report provides key lessons learned, as well as recommendations for extractive companies working in similar settings.

There will be a free , open access webinar in early 2016 that will provide an overview of the results as well as give the opportunity for a Q&A session with the authors.  For those interested, please send an email to  erica@habitatcorp.com to indicate your interest, and we will contact you with further details once a date has been set.

If you would like to download the report, please access it at: http://www.habitatcorp.com/ebola-report

We would be very curious to hear your thoughts on this work!  Please feel free to share this report with other individuals and networks.

Best regards,
Erica Westwood, Marla Orenstein and Jordon Kuschminder
