sharing in governance of extractive industries
Caetité, a town in Brazilian state of Bahia has the only active uranium mining in the country. The first two stages of the nuclear fuel cycle: mining and ore beneficiation, which results in the product called uranium concentrate or yellowcake.
The unit occupies an area of 1,700 hectares, located in a mineral province with reserves that reach 110 thousand tons of uranium with more than 38 ore deposits identified. Over the past 16 years INB Caetité has produced 3,750 tonnes of uranium concentrate from the open pit exploration of one of these deposits - the Cachoeira mine. The licensing process is under way to explore, also as open pit, a new deposit - the Engenho mine.
However the Bahia state government is extremely preoccupied with the residual materials - both yellowcake and those considered sterile.
What are the most modern methods of disposal and/or re-utilization of both types of tailings/ residues? Any suggestions, studies, good practice materials?
