sharing in governance of extractive industries
Meeting the world's sustainable development needs will require a considerable increase of FDI flows, especially of "sustainable investment" flows, i.e., investment that exhibits certain "sustainability characteristics": the economic, social, environmental, and governance contributions that governments expect MNEs to make to the development of host countries, and that MNEs (or their organizations) themselves say they seek to make to host countries' development. Based on an examination of 150 instruments (ranging from international investment agreements to MNE codes) that deal with the interaction between host countries and MNEs, this two-page Perspective identifies "common FDI sustainability characteristics" and suggests ways in which stakeholders can utilize and promote them, including in the context of investment facilitation.
The Perspective, written by Howard Mann and myself and entitled "Sustainable FDI for sustainable development", is available here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3140220.
