Transparency of Extractive Industries Toward Spatial Transparency

International Open Data Conference 2016 has just finished. And again, transparency of land use is being highlighted. On this light, we'd like to re-share our research study on spatial transparency of extractive industry in West Kalimantan Province, conducted by Swandiri Institute and Publish What You Pay Indonesia in 2014. Big findings include overlapping among the same commodity concession as well as between different concession.

This report consists of five sections. First part, explains several extractive aspects in West Kalimantan such as geographic location and socio-economy, extractive industries, and forest condition in West Kalimantan. Second part describes the research method that covers data collection method, data triangulation and data analysis method. Third part, describe result from study of literature, empirical studies, and GIS (Geographical Information System) web-based which the results are stored and can be freely accessed and online. Sections four discuss analysis of relation between spatial transparency and extractive industry with land deprivation owned by local communities in West Kalimantan. Section five concludes the findings, lessons learned, and recommendations for development in advanced research.

Despite of limited scope study, but the research findings are more likely found in other resource rich provinces. Thus, spatial transparency is highly encouraged.
