sharing in governance of extractive industries

A weekly digest of activity on GOXI

Under Rwanda's new mining law, "a person found culpable of causing mining site human injury, disability, incurable disease, or death faces up to 10 years in jail or fine of up to Rwf10 million." Nuwagira shares highlights from the new law and the jitters it is causing among some in the industry.

Ghana can escape a resource curse--if only it implements  the regulations it has adopted, according to Ishmael Ackah.

Too bad Ghana is stuck in a bad neigborhood. Through econometric analysis, Ackah also looks at the effect of bad company on good character.

As  Kenya too prepares to join the league of oil-producing nations, Gilbert Makore wonders why the Early Oil Pilot Scheme (EOPS) came before the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). Makore also looks at the gaps that led to a community road blockade,  calling it a litmus test of Kenya's oil governance.

In Iraq, however, street protests haven not stopped the country's oil production from hitting a 13-month high at 4.5 million barrels per day as oil-producing regions demand a bigger share of revenues.

And Rachel Etter-Phoya  chronicles Malawi's journey to full contract transparency.
