sharing in governance of extractive industries

A weekly digest of activity on GOXI

Through "a combination of wildly over-optimistic revenue projections based on unrealistic expectations of mineral sector revenue growth, off-budget spending, and a plethora of small infrastructure projects with questionable economic development benefits," David Mihalyi writes, Mongolia finds itself in a debt crisis. The IMF and other development partners have come to the rescue. But there's a price to pay

As one step towards solving the broader problem, Nazaket Azimli presents a course in revenue management in Eurasia, which will be held at Khazar University in Baku, Azerbaijan.

For sub-Saharan Africa, James McQuilken shares a collection of short papers from a workshop on harnessing extractive industries for development.

Still within Africa, RDF announces a big step--with the organization's help--in inter-Ministerial data sharing on mining companies and associated revenues in Guinea.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

This September we will launch a new GOXI Learning Series. This 7-month program will cover social and environmental conflict prevention topics as well as environmental governance. Each month of the learning series will be dedicated to a specific theme, featuring recent developments on that theme, blogs, tweets, and a customized webinar with subject matter experts, cases from different parts of the word, and an interactive discussion:

  • September 2017 – Biodiversity and Ecosystems: How can they be protected alongside large-scale mining?
  • October 2017 – Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement in decision-making processes.
  • November 2017- When Mines Close: Keeping people and the environment safe
  • December 2017 – Environmental Monitoring, Part 1: The fundamentals and access to information
  • January 2018 – Environmental Monitoring, Part II: Can participatory environmental monitoring committees empower citizens to shape decision making?
  • February 2018 - The Role of Government in Preventing Conflict in the extractive sector.
  • March 2018 - We will crowd source a theme from the GOXI community

Our first theme, Biodiversity and Ecosystems, will kick off on September 1 and will include our first webinar, on considering biodiversity and key ecosystem services in mining projects, that will take place October 3rd. We look forward to engaging you on these topics.

These and more jobs, blogs, photos, videos, and discussions are on GOXI.
