sharing in governance of extractive industries

A weekly digest of activity on GOXI

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) asks: "Could the focus on ‘blood diamonds’ divert discussions away from other types of equally needed action?" The Institute calls for broadening the conversation.

Being a quintessential developed resource-rich nation, one would expect Australia's loss rates from mineral extraction to sales to be insignificant, but Rahul Basu reports that that the country's mineral wealth is being looted in plain site.

In 2014, the government of Mali announced plans to reform its 2012 mining code. Brendan Schwartz offers key technical recommendations for the ongoing reform programme that would "enable Mali to overcome obstacles to derive greater revenue from mining, to improve local development around mining sites and to strengthen the rights of artisanal gold miners."
