sharing in governance of extractive industries

A weekly digest of activity on GOXI

Which tools and methodologies are you using measure the non-fiscal costs and benefits of the extractive sector? The Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) wants to know. Share yours.

RCS Global shares its tool to help companies prepare for and go beyond the requirements of the  conflict minerals provisions (Section 1502) of the Dodd-Frank Action Act. (Also, see George Lwanda's defense last week of the law).

Publish What You Pay-Us gives a lesson on how to use Google Refine to add geographic coordinates to a dataset.

Farid Guliyev argues that with the country's desperate need for foreign capital, Tajikistan must improve its mineral licensing system to make it transparent and predictable to potential investors.

Also in the spirit of optimizing mining regimes, African Mining Legislation Atlas(AMLA) reports from its 2016 workshop in Accra, Ghana.

Featured initiative - The SAM Project

The SAM Project (Phase 4) builds upon 10 years of implementation and aims to consolidate the remarkable progress towards responsible community mining within an enabling legal framework for Mongolia’s 60,000 artisanal miners and their dependents. It is also the culmination of more than 20 years of ASM projects by Swiss Development and Cooperation in four countries spanning two continents.

The SAM (Phase 4) seeks to transform Mongolia into an international knowledge hub for ASM best practice. The project development goal is “An economically sustainable, environmentally responsible and human rights based ASM sector in Mongolia benefiting from, and contributing to, global best practice regarding artisanal and small-scale mining.” To achieve progress towards this goal, the design of Phase 4 consists of three interconnected components.
