sharing in governance of extractive industries

A weekly digest of activity on GOXI

EITI validation in Afghanistan can be rather knotty, as Pablo Valverde and his colleague Alex Gordy found out. Still, there's hope.

But eight out of eleven recommendations in Papua New Guinea's EITI reports of 2013 to 2016 have been implemented, according to the EITI.

The Wall Street Journal reports that China is winning the global race to control batteries--and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is at the core.

Meanwhile, among the revisions to the Congo [mining] code are an increase in royalties on base minerals such as copper and cobalt from 2% to 3.5% and 5% royalty on strategic metals, Acomai Isabella reports. However, these adjustments, Isabella adds, have not gone down well with the international mining companies in the country.

But taxes and royalties are not always enough. Kojo Busia and Isabelle Ramdoo share five recommendations to make strategic use of local content policies

Another knotty area: artisanal and small-scale mining in Zimbabwe. Mukasiri Sibanda examines the factors shaping that aspect in that country's new order.

And as 18 people die in a clash with the military at an illegal mine in Venezuela, it is opportune that this month's GOXI learning series focuses on the role of government in preventing the escalation of conflict in the mining, oil and gas sectors.
