Why would you save money at 1 percent interest while you pay 9 percent interest on money you owe? This is why Andrew Bauer and David Mihalyi of the Natural Resource Governance Institute advice "authorities in countries with high debt payments, small or uncertain resource revenues relative to their economies, and acute development needs may wish to think twice before creating a 'premature fund'." From PDF to XLS--IGF secretariat shares how it helps member states make financial models of mining projects more useful. Who exactly is a Politically Exposed Person? This and related issues were discussed at the recent EITI Beneficial Ownership Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia. The World Bank's Cari Votava shares her thoughts. Zubin Bamji shares the World Bank's activities at the upcoming 2018 Mining Indaba. The activities will include a report on social progress in mining-dependent countries through the lens of the SDGs, a conversation amongst female leaders on closing the gender gap in artisanal and small-scale mining, and a consultative meeting of African mining ministers. Also at the Indaba, IGF will collaborate with the OECD for a side-event on February 5 on the hidden cost of tax incentives. Finally on February 5, the massive open online course (MOOC) on Natural Resources for Sustainable Development will start. The MOOC will be delivered in English but will also be available in Arabic, with video transcripts also available in French, Spanish, and Russian. But before then, remember to register for the webinars on participatory environmental monitoring committees on January 24 (English) and 25 (Spanish). Cases from Peru and Mongolia will be used for discussion and sharing of experiences. These and more jobs, blogs, photos, videos, and discussions on GOXI |
