sharing in governance of extractive industries

A weekly digest of activity on GOXI

Too many European Union (EU) Member States do not observe the "first-come, first-served" rule, among other regulatory weaknesses. Those weaknesses as well as strengths are discussed in the STRADE project's exploration of the Competitiveness of the EU's Mining Sector.

For Africa, it's not just low commodity prices straining the extractives sector and government budgets, Stephen Yeboah argues. Illicit financial flows too. (Check out this chart on the countries suffering the most from low oil prices)

In Afghanistan, that strain comes partly in the form of industrial-scale looting, as Javed Noorani reports.

Mira Oberman reports on the public launch of Mongolia's Mining Policy Framework Assessment, by the Intergovernmental Forum (IGF).

Oberman has also uploaded IGF's webinar of its guidance for governments on managing artisanal and small-scale mining.

In the first Tanzania post in weeks not related to Acacia Mining, Oxfam in Tanzania has some recommendations for the government on balancing infrastructure developments and community livelihoods.

These and more jobs, blogs, photos, videos, and discussions are on GOXI.
