But how does the extractives-for-development drive co-exist with low-carbon development ambitions in low-income countries? That's the subject of DfID's research.

And with the national petroleum company reportedly failing to transfer USD 3.8bn to the Federation Account in 2013 alone, Nigeriia's abundant oil resource has not contributed nearly enough to development. But reforms are said to be underway and the country's EITI validation might help.

Yves Bertran Alvarez's main focus is on artisanal and small scale mining, mostly on the social, technical, health and safety, and environmental aspects, and in particular through technical assistance projects in rural production of stones, gemstones and gold. He is also involved in the definition of mining policies and legal frameworks at State or Inter-regional Community levels. His recent work focuses on certification and traceability processes as incentives for better practices.
