sharing in governance of extractive industries

A weekly digest of activity on GOXI

Indonesia's new president, Joko Widodo, will find many briefs on his desk as he starts the business of governing.  In that spirit, the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) has collaborated with Gadjah Mada University to try to bring to his attention key considerations for governance of the natural resource sector.

Should you invest in an asset with a return of 3 to 6 percent when you’re paying 5 to 8 percent interest on your debt? These are some of the key considerations that Mongolia's leaders are grappling with as the country absorbs the shock of the slowdown in mining revenue and better prepares itself to make the most of the next boom.

In Colombia, two-thirds of all mining operations have no legal title, reports Abbi Buxton. So how do you formalize them? Abbi shares ideas from the International Institute for Environment and Development, plus lessons from the Philippines for taking care of the people who work on these operations.

The Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), with support from the Australian and US governments, has pulled lessons from all over to deliver a comprehensive portal to assist host governments in their planning, preparing for, negotiating, monitoring, and implementing of complex investment projects in the extractive industries, land and agriculture, and infrastructure sectors.

Alice Powell shares matters arising from the UK's EITI candidacy.

And ELL's Babar Turay presents his second blog on the effects of Ebola on Sierra Leone, and in particular its diamond mining district of Kono.

CORRECTION: Last week, our post on Foley Hoag's search for a CSR Advisor pointed to the wrong link. We apologize. Please click here for the correct job posting.
