sharing in governance of extractive industries

A weekly digest of activity on GOXI

Debre Zeit, Ethiopia. September 15, 2014. Starting with just a title and a blank page, a diverse group of experts in mining, economic and political governance, fiscal policies, environmental, geological, and development issues drawn from governments, civil society, academia and development partners began writing. The title: “A Country Mining Vision Guide Book: Domesticating the African Mining Vision.”

From Mongolia to Madagascar, lessons can be learned about aligning mining projects to country development plans to maximize contribution to broad-based social and economic development. These lessons were shared at the Intergovernmental Forum (IGF) on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development Annual General Meeting when ICMM hosted a panel discussion.

In Fall 2013, The Artisanal Gold Council (AGC) began an intensive field program to construct a mercury-free model for the sector in Burkina Faso, Africa's 4th biggest gold producer. Kevin Telmer shares highlights of the program in a video.

The AGC has also created a manual (in English and French) to guide the training of health practitioners on health risks that are common in the Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold ... (ASGM) sector with a focus on mercury, dust, and hygiene.

And Arash Irantalab Tehrani shares how the Canadian International Resource Development Institute (CIRDI) is working with NBK Institute of Mining Engineering to transform Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM), with experience from Bolivia to Zimbabwe.

Remember: Majala Mlagui asks for your vote for Jamii na Madini (Community and Minerals) for the Global Innovation Competition 2015.
