The real challenge is to regroup artisanal miners into formal business structures. 200m shafts require a huge amount of timber that no-one is replanting and often it's indigenous species of forest that get wiped out. I suggest ASM cooperatives/teams be turned into companies that would comply with environmental, financial and social responsibility rules. It appears each ASM site has its own rules that answer its unique complexities; therefore, It becomes difficult to find sustainable solutions that can improve the image and the performance of ASM (production, conditions of work...)
